Graham was born in North Carolina in the United States of America and he was educated at Bob Jones University, Florida Bible College and Wheaton College. He was ordained as a Southern Baptist minister and became an evangelist for the Youth for Christ movement. He achieved national fame through his Los Angeles Crusade of 1948 and he founded the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. His adult life has been dedicated to spreading the gospel, and his crusades throughout the United States and Great Britain have attracted huge audiences. He has also contributed regularly to the newspapers; he founded the fortnightly Christianity Today and the monthly Decision and his books Peace with God and World Aflame have been best-sellers. He has been a hugely influential figure and has advised several American Presidents. Probably no evangelist has made such an impression in Britain since the time of Dwight L. moody and Ira D. sankey in the 1870s.
